La Palma

The island of San Miguel de La Palma is the most north-westerly of the Canary Islands in the Atlantic.

Like Tenerife, it has the potential to be its own microcontinent. Due to the massive volcanic fissure it is not particularly large in cross-section, the particular air currents that pass over it and the fact that it is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, it offers extremely varied and diverse climates.

A multitude of endemic and fascinating plant species and around 40% forest area make the hearts of plant lovers beat faster. Another particularly attractive feature is that it has so far been spared mass tourism. You can still really walk paths here where you will hardly meet any other hikers.

There are some public bathing spots, but not all of them are easily accessible. And it also attracts more adventurous guests than the all-inclusive pool lovers of today.

But everyone comes to soak up the sun and enjoy the charm of others. The friendly Palmeros offer plenty of variety for travellers with their well-planned cuisine and festive calendar.

You should have a few words at the ready, because apart from Spanish, you don’t necessarily speak any other language.

Of course, you can also explore many destinations here, with a similarly well-developed bus network as on Tenerife. Nevertheless, there are a few things to consider and plan.
Some bus tours require either local knowledge (the bus stops are not signposted in the same way as in big cities. ), a sense of adventure (in which case you may have to walk or search spontaneously) or sufficient language skills (in which case you can follow the driver’s instructions or try to persuade him to give you a lift, even if you don’t have the necessary change – e.g. if it’s the last bus).

A hire car is recommended here! It’s a great way to discover the island! You can also explore wild beaches and barrancos.
